Book '1:59' Examines the Sub-Two-Hour Marathon

The book '1:59' was written to help competitive runners examine what it will take to run a sub-two-hour marathon.

The new athletic guide by Dr. Philip Maffetone, entitled 1:59: The Sub-Two Hour Marathon Is Within Reach—Here's How It Will Go Down, and What It Can Teach All Runners about Training and Racing, was released on Aug. 5.

The book was written to help competitive runners by examining what is needed to run a sub-two-hour marathon. Although times for the 26.2-mile races have been dropping with the emergence of faster runners over the decades, no one has finished below two hours. The athlete who accomplishes this monumental feat will undoubtedly garner instant fame around the world.

What can runners do to improve their chances of breaking down the two-hour barrier? According to 1:59, there's more to it than the most obvious factors of optimal body size, genetics and raw talent. This exceptional athlete will need to follow a healthy diet and an individualized training program that utilizes environmental components ("live high, train low").

The book talks about ways to make every second count, mentioning improved running form and economy, as well as sharpened mental focus, the importance of wearing the right kind of racing flats, and the option of going barefoot.

This book can benefit elite runners and will be enjoyed by all running enthusiasts. The training and racing principles discussed can be applied to all kinds of races, from 10K to ultramarathon.

Dr. Philip Maffetone has over 35 years of experience working with endurance athletes. One of his most famous patients was six-time Hawaii Ironman world champion Mark Allen. Maffetone has written 18 health and fitness books, including The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing.

Philip Maffetone's collaborator on 1:59 was Bill Katovsky.
