Remember the days before the NFL became the No Fun League? The days when Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson would bust out ridiculous touchdown celebrations every other week? Well, as part of its new Bolder than Bold campaign, Butterfinger is looking to put the fun back in football. They are offering to cover up to $50,000 in fines for any NFL player bold enough to perform an over-the-top touchdown celebration in any of the final three games of the season.
"Butterfinger celebrates living boldly both on and off the field," said Butterfinger brand manager Kristen Mandel in a press release. "Bold end zone celebrations are the perfect opportunity for players to show off their authentic selves, and we are excited to be a part of bringing them back to the game. We don't believe there is such a thing as 'excessively' celebrating in the end zone. For us, the bolder the celebration, the better!"
Butterfinger has teamed up with Owens and comedian Billy Eichner to spread the word about their unique offer. In the video above, the two men hit the streets of New York City asking people to bust out their boldest touchdown dance.
Owens is a perfect partner for this campaign. His wildly entertaining touchdown celebrations, including one in which he pulled a Sharpie out of his sock to autograph a football, are still remembered fondly today.
STACK spoke with T.O. about the campaign, and we asked him what player he thinks is most likely to bust out a bold TD celebration during these next three games.
"The two that come to mind, and they're on the same team, are Josh Norman and Cam Newton. These guys have great personalities, they like to have fun, they're winning and everything is all good. So it depends what extent they want to go to to express themselves," Owens said. "Guys that have lost that I thought would've been a great fit for this campaign are guys like Richard Sherman, Antonio Brown and Marshawn Lynch, but unfortunately those guys will be stuck watching, as will I."
