Brave New World is the latest expansion pack for Sid Meier's popular Civilization V strategy game. The long-awaited expansion landed in stores last week. It's compatible with both the PC and Mac versions of 2010's Civilization: V.
As with previous editions, the latest version of Civilization—or "Civ" as it's called by devoted fans—is a turn-based game that gives players the choice of several different civilizations to lead. Players get to lead a nation through thousands of years, building and battling against rival civilizations.
The Brave New World expansion adds nine civilizations and eight wonders to the civilizations, rulers and wonders from previous versions of the game. Building alliances with other city-states is more important than ever in the new version of the game, as players can use the game's World Congress to impose sanctions against nations that "go rogue." This can be helpful if a player assumes a defensive strategy and is aiming for a cultural victory, but could cause problems for players who prefer a less subtle, winner-take-all approach to strategy.
For gamers who prefer an experience that lasts hours rather than days or weeks, the expansion has new scenarios that make the game highly replayable. Some of these scenarios include choosing sides in the American Civil War or exploring Africa as one of the colonial powers rushing to gain control of land and resources.
Whether you want to play a short, custom scenario against the computer or you're ready for an expansive showdown against human players, Civilization V: Brave New World has a lot to offer.
