Detox regimens are popular among people who want to cleanse their bodies. Many products are available that claim to clean out your gut, but are they doing more harm than good? STACK talked to sports dietitian Leslie Bonci to find out whether detox cleanses actually work.
Bonci says that most detox products are too strong for the body. What detox does is make you go to the bathroom a lot, which depletes your body of fluids, even electrolytes. Many cleanse products are extremely potent, and they can deplete your energy.
Instead of detoxing, Bonci says you need to "restock." This makes you think about what you should be putting in your body every day instead of worrying about what to take out.
Start by drinking more water. Proper hydration keeps everything moving through your body. Second, consume more fiber. Fiber functions by clearing your body of toxins. Third, the best way to restock is with fruits and vegetables. They provide fiber, fluid and a lot of nutritional benefits.
Restocking is a safer and healthier way to cleanse your body. To learn more, check out the video above.
