Meme royalties are a thing now, according to rapper Ja Rule.
The Queens-born rapper tweeted Monday that NBA legend Michael Jordan receives $1 every time a "Crying Jordan" meme is used. Little did he know, that is not how memes work.
After Ja Rule realized that his tweets were completely wrong—Jordan of course does not receive "meme royalties"—he deleted them, saying he got the information from a TMZ comedy site. But that didn't stop "crying Jordan" memes from being directed at him for his hilarious tweet.

It would actually be pretty neat if memes earned royalties. According to Forbes, Jordan has a net worth of $1.14 billion. Among other revenue generators, he has his own line of Air Jordan shoes and a Hanes underwear endorsement. But he could certainly make a lot more money if memes garnered royalties.
At STACK, we feel for Ja Rule and his blissful naiveté. Maybe ignorance truly is bliss.
