Jack Black Stars in 'Goosebumps' Movie

Jack Black will portray R.L. Stine in the comedy adventure movie 'Goosebumps.'

Jack Black will star as YA horror author R.L. Stine in the upcoming adventure/comedy Goosebumps. The feature film adaptation of the popular kids' book series centers on Zach Cooper, a teenaged boy trying to adjust to small town life after moving to Greendale, Maryland from the big city. Things seem to be improving when Zach meets Stine's daughter, the beautiful Hannah, who lives right next door.

As great as Hannah may be, Zach soon discovers that her father is a real oddball who is a prisoner of his own imagination. As it turns out there's a good reason for Stine's eccentricity. The monsters he writes about aren't merely fictional characters. They are real, and Stine must protect his readers by keeping the beasts locked in their books. Things quickly spin out of control when Zach inadvertently frees the monsters from their manuscripts. Stine, Hannah and Zach are compelled to capture the dangerous creatures and force them back into their literary cages before they terrorize the town further.

Starring as Zach is Scandal's Dylan Minnette. The cast also includes Odeya Rush, recently seen in The Giver, along with Halston Sage (Neighbors), Amy Ryan (Birdman), Timothy Simons (Veep), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), and Ken Marino of TV's Marry Me.

The movie was directed by Rob Letterman, best known for writing and directing the hit film Monsters vs. Aliens.

The screenplay was written by a team that includes Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After), Mike White (School of Rock) and Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia), as well as frequent collaborators Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Problem Child and Big Eyes).

Known for playing a wide variety of offbeat characters, Jack Black seems a natural choice for the fictional version of Stine. Coming Soon.net quoted Black as saying: "I play R.L. Stine, who's not in any of the books, but he's an essential character in this movie. All of his characters come to life. It was kind of a great way to bring out all of the scary beasts and monsters from all of his books in one movie."

Goosebumps will hit theaters nationwide Aug. 7.
