'Lucy' Director to Helm Sci-Fi Epic 'Valerian'

Luc Besson will bring a popular French comic book series to life with the feature film 'Valerian: And the City of a Thousand Planets.'

French-born director Luc Besson, who recently achieved enormous success with the Scarlett Johansson action blockbuster Lucy, has signed on to direct the sci-fi epic Valerian: And the City of a Thousand Planets.

The filmmaker will write and direct this big screen adaptation of the popular French comic book series Valerian and Laureline, created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres in 1967, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Besson used his first Twitter post to make the announcement: "First logo #Valerian, under a picture of the prospective film's logo."

The storyline of this futuristic film chronicles the adventures of Valerian, a time and space traveling agent  originally from planet Earth, and his red-haired sidekick Laureline, an 11th Century peasant girl.

Set to star in the movie are  two of the hottest young actors in Hollywood right now: Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and 22-year-old model/actress Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina). Delevingne will soon become more familiar to moviegoers. She will be appearing in a number of prominent films by the end of next year, including Suicide Squad, John Green's Paper Towns, the fantasy adventure flick Pan and the star-studded historical drama Tulip Fever, which will also feature DeHaan in the cast.

Besson will work with his wife, Virginie Besson Silla, who is producing, financing and distributing Valerian via the couple's EuropaCorp production company.

Besson is currently filming the action thriller The Lake, in theaters July 15, 2016.

Production on Valerian: And the City of a Thousand Planets is scheduled to begin around the end of this year and is expected to hit theaters worldwide in the summer of 2017.
