Olivia Wilde to Reunite with Garrett Hedlund for 'Tron 3'

The third movie in the 'Tron' franchise, set to begin filming later this year, will reunite Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund.

Olivia Wilde will reunite with Garrett Hedlund for Tron 3, the follow-up to the 2010 big screen sci-fi adventure Tron: Legacy, which grossed over $400 million worldwide. Joseph Kosinski will return as director.

Legacy was the second installment in the franchise, coming nearly 30 years after the original computer drama Tron, which starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner and eventually became a cult favorite. Legacy continued the story by introducing the character of Sam Flynn, the son of Bridges' character, virtual world designer Kevin Flynn. In the film, Sam jumps into The Grid to find his missing father. Wilde played an algorithm named Quorra.

Both Wilde and Hedlund will reprise their original roles. No news yet on whether Jeff Bridges will rejoin the cast, but Bruce Boxleitner is coming back as Alan Bradley.

The screenplay is being written by David DiGilio of the TV crime series Traveler, and Jesse Wigutow, best known for penning the Michael Douglas comedy It Runs in the Family.

Plot details are not being revealed for this Disney feature, but unconfirmed reports indicate the title will be Tron: Ascension, which could be an important clue to the storyline. As Screen Rant speculates: "It would stand to reason that other factions or elements of The Grid world could begin to make the jump into the real world."

Legacy co-producer Justin Springer will be returning to produce.

Tron 3 is expected to begin filming this fall in Vancouver. The threequel is due to premiere sometime in 2017.
