'LEGO Movie' Directors Set to Write, Produce Animated 'Spider-Man' Pic

More Spider-Man is coming to the big screen, this time as an animated feature due for release in 2018.

During their presentation at this year's Cinema-Con, Sony announced that an animated Spider-Man is in the works, and that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the blockbuster The LEGO Movie, are set to write and produce the project. However, Lord and Miller are not currently slated to direct the film.

The news came from surprise guest Tom Rothman, the new chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, who said, "It will be something quite unlike anything you have seen before. The highly technical term for it is, 'It's [expletive] awesome.'"

During the presentation, Rothman also discussed how the studio plans to move forward following last year's hacking scandal involving The Interview and the ousting of Sony mogul Amy Pascal, saying: "It's a new day at the studio and there are mighty things ahead. I believe in [big] movies for big worldwide audiences. I also believe in diverse slates."

Amy Pascal and other producers from the live-action superhero franchise, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, will join Lord and Miller as producers on the as-yet-untitled animated feature, although it intended to exist apart from projects in the live-action universe.

Lord and Miller are also working on new installments of The LEGO Movie series, including The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Movie Sequel. Non-animated projects for which the duo are teaming up include 23 Jump Street.

The animated Spider-Man is expected to hit theaters nationwide on July 20, 2018. Fans won't have to wait quite as long for the live-action Marvel and Sony reboot. It is due out July 28, 2017.
