Now it's a competition! Sony fully unveiled the PlayStation 4 Monday and announced plans to sell  the 500 GB version of its next-generation console for $399.99. At that price, the PS4 will hit shelves $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.

In addition to the console, the box includes one DualShock 4 controller (complete with a touchpad, headphone jack and the "share' feature), a mono headset, an AC power cord and HDMI and USB cables. An extra controller will run an additional $59, which is the same price you'll pay for the PS4 Eye camera add-on. The Eye gives gamers the ability to use body movements in some games and log into the system using face recognition. It can also interface with the DualShock to position players according to their place in a room.

According to engadget, Sony has officially confirmed that the 500 GB hard drive will be upgradeable. And the company hasn't ruled out releasing new models of the console, which means we could see a new version with larger storage, and even a few limited editions, in the future.

SCEA President Jack Tretton further distanced his console from the Xbox One by stating that the PS4 will not require online authentication checks in order to play offline games. Also, the system won't be region-locked or impose restrictions on used games. But if users intend to use the online multiplayer feature, they will have to purchase a PS Plus Membership, which will run $9.99/month in the U.S.

As for aesthetics, the packaging hasn't changed much. The PS4 looks like its predecessors with the same black rectangular shape.

Online retailers Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and Walmart are all taking pre-orders for the next-generation console. Sony has not provided a solid release date for the PS4, but the company did confirm that it would arrive during the winter holiday season.
