'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2' Scheduled to Start Filming

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2,' the sequel to last year's hit movie, begins shooting next month.

Everyone's favorite crime-fighting turtles are back! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, which follows the 2014 hit big screen adaptation, will begin filming next month in New York City and Buffalo. Dave Green (Earth to Echo) will direct this action-adventure comedy, in which the turtles will once again be compelled to protect New York City from impending danger.

This Turtle franchise, which began life in comic books before spawning the popular animated TV series, appeals to a wide range of ages, which could explain the huge financial success of last year's reboot, despite a mostly negative reception from critics.

Many of the filmmakers involved in the first installment are returning for the second film, including producers Michael Bay (Transformers), Brad Fuller (The Purge) and Andrew Form (Ouija). Also returning are the original film's screenwriters, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who have collaborated on a number of other projects, including Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol.

Actors confirmed to be reprising their roles are Megan Fox as news reporter April O'Neil and William Fichtner, who will again play Eric Sacks.

Although details of the sequel are being kept under wraps, in an interview with Cinema Blend, Fichtner discussed the possibility that it will draw from the franchise's roots. He said, "There's some very interesting things that even the first movie touches on of the origins of everything. And I'd love to explore [that]. But you know, there are so many avenues to go down now in the history of what the Turtles have been, with past storylines, and the origins of the movie [universe] itself."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is expected to hit theaters nationwide June 3, 2016.
