Tom Brady's parents always believed he could do anything he set his mind to.
"I'm so blessed that I had parents that never put limits on what I wanted to do and what I felt I loved," Brady told reporters at the recent Tribeca ESPN Sports Film Festival. "My dad taught me that at a young age if you're going to do it, give it everything you've got, and my mom was always the one that said 'You can do it. You can do it, sweetheart.'"
Awww. How sweet. But in this next quote, Brady's mother, Galynn, slides from supportive into borderline delusional. "I would say 'Mom, guys like Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, they make all these great plays with their feet.' [And she'd say] 'Well, you're just as fast as they are!'," Brady said.
Oh, Mrs. Brady. We get that Tom's your son, but even he isn't buying that one. Is he a phenomenal quarterback? Absolutely. But is he as fast as Cam Newton or Russell Wilson? Hardly.
Let's do a quick compare of some numbers to get a better idea of how these three quarterbacks stack up in terms of speed. At the 2000 NFL Combine, Brady ran a painfully slow 5.28 40-Yard Dash. Maybe if he hadn't worn a bed sheet-sized t-shirt, he could've run a little faster, but this guy certainly is not a burner:
In comparison, Cam Newton ran a 4.59 40-Yard Dash at the 2011 NFL Combine, and Russell Wilson ran a 4.55 40-Yard Dash at the 2012 NFL Combine. So, yeah. That pretty much says everything you need to know to settle the question. We could also point to the fact that since 2012, Brady has totaled 125 rushing yards compared to Newton's 2,501 and Wilson's 2,430, but you probably don't need any more convincing.
