Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High) has been cast as one of the two human leads in War of the Planet of the Apes, the next installment in the smash hit film franchise. The picture will carry on the story of evolved ape Caesar, who is brought to life by actor Andy Serkis through motion-capture technology. The title has prompted speculation that the movie will feature the concluding battle between apes and humans for dominion over the Earth.
Director Matt Reeves, who helmed the last film, will return for the new project, as will screenwriter Mark Bomback, who is set to write the script. Reeves was quoted by Inquisitr as saying: "This is going to be the story that is going to cement [Caesar's] status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost Biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses."
Besides Serkis, it is unclear at this point, which cast members from the previous film (if any) will come back for the new installment.
Chavarria is best known for his work in television, but his big screen career is heating up. In addition to this movie, he is also filming the highly anticipated Latino drama Low Riders with Demian Bichir and Melissa Benoist, for Universal.
Regarding the future of the Apes franchise, this third film may not be the finale after all. Serkis gave fans reason to hold out hope when he told MTV last year, "It might be three films, It could be four. It could be five. Who knows? But the journey will continue. It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one.
War of the Planet of the Apes is slated to hit theaters on July 14, 2017.
