Will Smith to Star in Action-Thriller 'Bounty'

Will Smith has signed on to star in and produce the action-thriller flick 'Bounty.'

Will Smith has signed on to play a man wrongly convicted of murder in the big screen action-thriller Bounty, from Paramount. The screenplay was written by Sascha Penn, best known for the TV movie The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives and the new Starz series, Survivor's Remorse.

Set in Boston, the story follows Smith's character as he escapes from prison in an attempt to prove his innocence. His biggest challenge is to avoid getting caught by someone looking to get rich quick, after the victim's widow goes on television to announce a $10 million bounty on his head.

Smith will also produce the picture via his Overbrook Entertainment banner, and his brother-in-law, Caleeb Pinkett, will oversee production for the company. Adam Kolbrenner (Prisoners) will produce on behalf of Madhouse Entertainment.

Paramount obviously sees potential in the project. The studio engaged in a bidding war to win the rights to the script. But considering the exciting plotline and Smith's involvement, it's hard to imagine the film not becoming a hit.

After playing supporting characters over the past couple of years, Smith is returning to leading roles. Two of his films are debuting this year: the crime drama Focus, with Margot Robbie (out this week); and the sports drama Concussion, set for release on Christmas Day. Nevertheless, the actor's most highly anticipated performance is playing Deadshot in the big screen comic book adaptation Suicide Squad, which will reunite him with Robbie. It slated for release Aug. 5, 2016.

No word yet on a release date for Bounty.
